Water Quality Monitoring
The Chattooga River’s water quality is threatened by pollution in several of its tributaries. The Chattooga Conservancy works to monitor streams and creeks throughout the watershed, identify potential sources of sediment and fecal coliform pollution, and find ways to mitigate these pollution sources. Current and historic sample locations can be seen on our Chattooga Watershed Interactive Map.

The Chattooga Conservancy is now offering SC Adopt-a-Stream (SC AAS) Freshwater Monitoring workshops. Workshops are free to attend and last about 5 hours, during which participants learn to assess stream conditions and monitor temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, bacteria (E. coli), and transparency. Certified volunteers can then choose a site to adopt, borrow a kit from the Chattooga Conservancy, and share data to the public SC AAS Database.

Stay tuned for our next workshop, anticipated in late summer/early fall of 2025. You can also sign up for our Volunteer Alerts to receive an email when the workshop is scheduled!

If you would like to support our water quality monitoring efforts, please consider becoming a member or donating! Annual contributions from our members help us continue projects like this that lead to direct actions to protect the river we all love.
